Duration: 1, 3 and 6 months

Mode: Regular and intensive (online and face-to-face)

Requirements: According to the course (Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced)

Background

Since 1998, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) identified communication errors that affected aviation safety, among other factors. One of the worst accidents in aviation history was the Tenerife airport disaster, which signaled a turning in the approach to safety.

Subsequently, the ICAO adopted a series of measures, called SARPs (Standard and Recommended Practices), aimed at strengthening language proficiency requirements for pilots and air traffic controllers during operations.

In 2004, the ICAO published Document 9835/Annex 453, which clearly establishes the importance and correct use of standard phraseology. It also states that plain English shall be used whenever the use of the standard phraseology is not possible. Both pilots and controllers must demonstrate a minimum level of proficiency in English.

A. ICAO English Proficiency Examination and Certification by PACIFIC OCEAN (online exam and on-site exam – Face to face).

The exam assesses the knowledge of the following skills: Pronunciation (phonological skill), Structure (grammar), Vocabulary (knowledge of words), Fluency (ability to speak with speed, accuracy and proper expression), Comprehension (ability to understand speech), Interaction (ability to engage in dialogue).

The on-site exam is held at Pacific Ocean S.A.’s hangar, located at San Fernando International Airport. Taking the exam here is a unique experience on account of the professional and warm treatment given to each candidate and the welcoming aviation environment. The on-site exam consists of three parts: personal introduction, aeronautical communications (ATIS, clearances, instructions), and understanding and providing an account of an abnormal situation.

For the online exam, the last part consists in picture description and discussion.

Both the on-site and the online exams end with a simulated case in which the relevant emergency communication must be established.
